🗣️ Dillon debrief
(where i pretend to be an opinion columnist)
Some Quick Things I Believe After 10+ Years in the Legal Sports Betting & Fantasy Industry With Zero Context Because I Don’t Feel Like Typing
1. the black market is still much bigger than the legal market, even in regulated states
2. SGP + lotto-style betting is actually the most responsible way to bet, despite a higher hold
3. related ⬆️ the average risk amount per bet will decrease over time
4. the only way to acquire an existing VIP who has never played legally is through 1 to 1 human interaction aka relationships
5. match fixing will decrease over time with further legalization
6. over-regulation is bad for operators and consumers
7. the rise of pick selling is bad for people but not all pick sellers are bad people
(money moves and conversations with industry professionals)
grabbed this screenshot from one of my favorite newsletters Earnings & More. it breaks down the bad week of “hold” that sports betting operators had in New York due to all of the 1-seeds making the final 4.
being customer facing, i find it fascinating and somewhat comical that actual sports outcomes are discussed by large financial institutions and by C-level Execs in earnings calls on Wall Street.
there’s also a school of thought that customers having a better stretch than expected may actually be a net positive for an operator long term. if customers don’t feel like they can win, they’ll stop playing and try something else.

🧠 insightful insights
(sports gambling and business thoughts)
US Sports Gambling Regulations Are Confusing
i’ll start by saying… i am far from an expert on this topic, but one of my best friends did get into law school in 2014 (he didn’t go).
when discussing the business side of the industry it’s important to touch on the legal landscape, if nothing else because it’s so damn confusing.
from my seat, it feels like there’s more uncertainty than there was 7 years ago when legalization kicked off. i have to assume that was not the plan.
bills pop up out of nowhere, nobody knows what to do with prediction markets and sweepstakes, and the rules are changing constantly.
behind the scenes companies in the space are constantly trying to figure out what direction to go based on ever changing statements and vague guidance.
it still feels like the wild wild west in that regard.

luckily there are people who understand the issues on a deep level.
like Alex Kane, CEO of Sporttrade and also a very smart dude. Alex wrote a letter published in the Straight to The Point newsletter, directed towards legislators and regulators in the space.
it’s a great piece that breaks down how open market participation and innovation are stunted by the current framework. highly recommend ⬇️
