the most interesting open jobs in sports betting today
(where i pretend to be an opinion columnist)
the sports betting community has a lot of work to do when it comes toā¦actual community.
during the height of Daily Fantasy Sports (2013-2017), it felt like there was true camaraderie amongst players and employees. people were rooting each other, had each others backs, and brought (mostly) good vibes.
the Best Ball community on Underdog has that same feeling now.
but if you spend any time on social media, sports betting feels so negative!
part of thatās the player-vs-operator dynamic. but itās deeper than that. scammy pick sellers, distrust, and ego are heavily involved.
you also have hot takes either criticizing or defending the industry with absolutely zero nuance.
maybe this is just how itāll always be.
(money moves and conversations with industry professionals)
thereās a trend iām loving right now. established, non-betting companies hiring for sports betting related roles.
three that stood out this week:
Director, Organic Growth (Sports) - Crypto.com
Manager, Sports Betting & Gaming - NBC Universal
these arenāt operators. theyāre not taking bets. but they are dipping their toes in, searching for ways to show up in the betting space and take advantage of the booming industry.
this is a good sign for everyone. good for those of us already in the industry (more opportunities). good for people trying to break in (more doors to open). and good for the space overall. it shows that the space is becoming more engrained in the culture and is here to stay.
(side note - if the Principal at Amazon gets in trouble does he get sent to his own office?)

š§ insightful insights
(where business insights and sports gambling collide)
many people i call me āthe nardwuar of sports gamblingā
hereās the move if you have a $30 gifting budget and a lead who never replies:
dig into their pre-Covid timeline (trust me, no one remembers what they posted in 2017)
find a post where they name-drop a player theyāre obsessed with
track down a weird or personal item tied to that player (etsy, teepublic, ebay etc)
include a printout of the original post with the gift
youāre not sending swag, youāre sending a memory. itās specific, clever, and actually gets a response.
thoughtfulness scales harder than spend.
