Identifying an open job in sports betting is easy. Linkedin.com is a nice platform.

But knowing which role is right for you can be tricky, especially if it’s your first time in the industry.

If you’ve read any job postings from operators and thought “what does this person actually do”, you’re not alone. Even after 15 years in the industry, i still feel that way from reading some of these buzzwordy, vague descriptions.

(I’m sure I’ve been a culprit in writing some too.)

But today is a new day - so I’m breaking down 3 sports betting & fantasy job descriptions into something even i’d understand, plus NBA player comparisons for each 🏀 ⬇️

💡These are our interpretations of the roles based on experience working for operators. We’re starting with open jobs at Operators because we get asked about em the most!💡

AML Associate @ Underdog - Let’s start with the home team, Underdog, where I work full-time as a Vice President. Also the best operator in the USA according to me.

Sportsbook & Fantasy operators have to do a lot to stay above board. In order to stay legal and compliant, an AML Associate needs to be on the lookout for violations.

What you’ll be doing:

Monitor transactions and user activities for suspicious behavior
- Example: A user deposits $50,000, places a few strange bets, and withdraws the money within hours without any major wins or losses. Your job? Spot this behavior and determine if this should be flagged.
Verify the identities of users and partners (KYC and due diligence)
- Example: A new user signs up with incomplete or suspicious information, like a fake ID or mismatched address. It’s on you to verify their identity and make sure we’re not onboarding someone who could cause problems.
Be the eyes and ears of the operation, helping us stay in regulators’ good graces
- Example: If a regulator requires us to report large deposits within 24 hours, you’d make sure all those transactions are flagged and reported on time. Missing this could mean fines or even losing our license to operate.

VIP Host (Ontario) @ FanDuel

Being a VIP Host means being the face of the company for its most important customers. You’re not just managing relationships; you’re building loyalty and curating experiences that increase entertainment value for the customer.

What you’ll be doing:

Building and maintaining relationships with high-value customers
Example: You’ll regularly check in with VIP players, be their point of contact for support related inquiries, and provide them access to personalized experiences. If a player loves hockey, you might set them up with premium Maple Leafs tickets.
Planning and executing campaigns/events for VIPs
Example: Organizing a trip to a Raptors game or hosting a luxury watch party for a big UFC event to create memorable experiences for the company’s top customers.
Ensuring responsible, sustainable play
Example: You’ll coordinate with the Responsible Gaming team to ensure customers stay within healthy boundaries. This should include proactive wellness checks in addition to helpful reactive measures.

Associate Trader @ Fanatics

Gone are the days of manually setting lines for every game, no pen and paper needed, but in this role you are on the front lines of the business. If you’re math-inclined this Associate-level role is a good one to get your foot in the door.

What you’ll be doing:

Keeping odds in check by spotting outliers and anomalies
Example: If a ridiculous line is posted, like making Lebron James +5000 to make the Hall of Fame, you’ll jump in to fix it before customers take advantage of the error.
Monitoring live betting scenarios
Example: During a fast-paced NBA game, you’ll monitor how the odds adjust and the bet flow comes through, ensuring it’s accurate and fair while staying ahead of bettor behavior.
Collaborating with the analytics and product teams
Example: You’ll provide feedback on performance, help refine models, and suggest improvements for smoother operations.
